Alongside Jumeau and Bru, the manufactory was one of the "three great houses", but only existed from 1863 to 1891. Their artistic, technically high-quality dolls were a luxury item for the elite. Despite awards such as the silver medal in 1887, Schmitt was unable to hold its own in the price war - which increases the rarity value of its dolls even today..."

Pia's blog:,,...the exquisite Poupée de Mode from the House of Barrois are a prime example of the luxury of the Second Empire under Napoleon III around 1860. These fashion dolls were not toys or dolls in the conventional sense. These fashion dolls served to convey the latest Parisian fashions to the ladies of "high society" worldwide. As haute couture dress sculptures, they reflected the spirit of the Second Empire. The House of Barrois was famous for the exceptional quality of its porcelain, which produced an almost "moonlit" pallor. The fine porcelain heads were mounted on a fully articulated wooden body whose upper body was covered with fine goatskin. This gave the doll an elegant, aristocratic appearance..."

Pia`s Blog:,,...the "Poupée de Mode" underwent a change in its appearance. The rather severe looks of the 1860s changed to softer, more lovely faces. This doll is an exemplary example of a late fashion doll. The new cranked head that emerged in these later years allowed the head to be tilted and turned to create a more human expression. The heads also changed to "rejuvenated" facial features, reminiscent of the later emerging Bébés. This doll combines the skin couture character of the classic fashion doll with the emotional warmth of the later Bébés. With its enfantine look (French enfant = child), this doll represents a special turning point and transition to later Bébés..."
