Pia’s Blog: In 1927, the Steiff company and the English company Chad Valley & Co. fought a duel for the rights to a replica of the English comic figure, a young, comical fox terrier, “Bonzo”. However, Steiff loses this battle. The samples sent to England did not correspond closely enough to the original, which was mainly marketed in books and other sales levels via licenses. Steiff immediately ceased production of the series. There are 7 sizes of the small dog in the Steiff archive; a total of 115 samples were produced. However, Paul Steiff did not give up completely. The “Cheerio”, a model of a puppy with an exaggerated sweet smiling face, was launched in 1929 and was remotely similar to the Bonzo pattern.
